About Us
A Bit of Background
Who we are is really tied into how we got started.
Terry Hull, our founder, spent a good part of his career living in places outside the USA -mainly in South America- with his bride Jane (both from Janesville, WI). Terry loves to talk to people. It’s beyond a passion! It’s a need!... Like breathing! That made them interact with many people in South America and learned to enjoy and love their language and culture.

When Terry and Jane retired to Doylestown, PA, both missed having the opportunity to converse in Spanish. Although Doylestown hosted German and French language clubs, there was no Spanish language club. Terry took matters in his own hands. He posted a sign at a public bulletin board: “If you want to speak Spanish, give me a call.” And he left the address. Doylestown is like that, you’d like it here!

The first person to respond was our co-founder Melissa Harrison (along with her mother who was born in Spain) who also wanted to practice her language skills. So, the Hispanic Society of Doylestown (or "Sociedad Hispana", as we like to call it) is really based on two things:
enjoying each other’s company and speaking Spanish.

What began as a small, social group has grown over the years to more than 90 members and has a much more organized structure. Sociedad Hispana Doylestown is now a 501c(3) approved, non-profit organization. Founded in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 2007, we are dedicated to facilitating cross cultural understanding among the Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities in our area through language, literature, the arts, and community engagement.

Sociedad Hispana implements its mission statement through cross-cultural exchanges including weekly conversation groups, Spanish and English language learning opportunities, a Spanish book club, Tertulia gatherings, school presentations, cultural local or trips to NYC and Philadelphia, local and global community outreach and more! Feel free to contact us with any questions.
