About Us

A Bit of Background

Who we are is really tied into how we got started.

Terry, our founder, spent a good part of his career living in places outside the USA -mainly in South America- with his bride Jane (both from Janesville, WI). Now, if you've ever met Terry, you'd know that he loves to talk to people. It’s beyond a passion! It’s a need! Like breathing!

When Terry and Jane retired to Doylestown, PA, both missed having the opportunity to converse in Spanish. Although Doylestown hosted German and French language clubs, there was no Spanish language club; Terry took matters in his own hands. He posted a sign at a public bulletin board: “If you want to speak Spanish, give me a call.” And he left the address. Doylestown is like that, you’d like it here!

The first person to respond was our co-founder Melissa (along with her mother who was born in Spain) who also wanted to practice her language skills. So, the Hispanic Society of Doylestown (or "Sociedad Hispana", as we like to call it) is really based on two things:

enjoying each other’s company and speaking Spanish.

What began as a small, social group has grown over the years to more than 90 members and has a much more organized structure. Sociedad Hispana Doylestown is now a 501c(3) approved, non-profit organization. Founded in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 2007, we are dedicated to facilitating cross cultural understanding among the Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities in our area through language, literature, the arts, and community engagement.

Sociedad Hispana implements its mission statement through cross-cultural exchanges including weekly conversation groups, Spanish and English language learning opportunities, a Spanish book club, Tertulia gatherings, school presentations, cultural trips to NYC and Philadelphia, local and global community outreach and more! Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Susan Lee-Miller

Vice President

Susan has been a member of Sociedad Hispana Doylestown since 2011, when she attended her first conversation group prior to a trip to Spain. She was interested in brushing up on her high school Spanish and was taken in by the gracious and hospitable people in the conversation group. Susan has enjoyed meeting the many SHD members over the years and learning about everyone’s varied backgrounds (different countries of origin, different reasons for joining the group, different generations, etc).
Currently, Susan is a massage therapist in New Britain and lives with her husband and recent college graduate son in Buckingham. She is excited to be Vice President and looks forward to the upcoming events of this warm and friendly group!

Karin Schreiber

Secretary

Karin Schreiber and Alejandro Cebado, originally from Mexico City, have been members of Sociedad Hispana for many years. They married in 1990 and have two children: Alejandro and Ricardo. They moved to Pennsylvania in 2010, for Alejandro's job and became involved with Sociedad Hispana at that time.

Karin has been a translator and interpreter for over thirty years. She also enthusiastically volunteers in supporting the community.

Alejandro is an executive operations manager in the food industry, with almost forty years of experience.

In 2016, Alejandro was transferred to Spain for work and Karin moved there soon afterwards. In October 2019, they returned to Pennsylvania and happily became involved again in the Sociedad Hispana, this time with more formal responsibilities: Karin as Secretary and Alejandro as Treasurer.

Karin and Alejandro enjoy volunteering with Sociedad Hispana and are looking forward to helping this wonderful organization continue to grow and support the local Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities even more.
